Everywhere you look it seems like academic freedom, censorship, and university governance are in the news. Although these seem like new threats to the mission of higher education, the AAUP has been around since 1915 to help advocate for faculty on these very issues. We have had an AAUP presence at CofC off and on over the years, and we formally re-established an advocacy chapter in 2020.
You might be wondering, what is an advocacy chapter? We are not a union, although the AAUP does have unionized chapters on other campuses and recently voted to affiliate with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). As an advocacy chapter, our goal is to work with other stakeholders on campus to support faculty and advocate for shared governance. We have worked to collect data and share our reporting about issues affecting faculty on campus. You can see our reports on our website. We have also helped individual faculty members navigate different issues related to the terms of their employment.
We do not collect chapter dues at this time, but if you want to join to support the work of the AAUP, or if you are interested in becoming more involved in the work of the chapter, you can join the national organization here:
